Dear Grade 11 and 12 Parents,
We wanted to reach out regarding student attendance as we move into the final weeks of the school year.
Last week, the Grade 12 students participated in an unofficial skip day. As a school, we recognize that this has historically been a standard and that celebrating milestones and the excitement of graduating or nearing graduation are meaningful parts of the high school experience. We continue to work on developing processes and protocols that celebrate our community while also adhering to the academic standards and expectations we have set as a school. We will be moving toward not excusing a skip day moving forward, as we do give our graduates three excused days off of school for their grad trip.
Additionally, we have noticed a drop in attendance for senior students as can happen at this time of year as the weather improves and the end of the year approaches. We have heard that some Grade 11 students may be planning their own skip day. We want to communicate clearly that the school does not condone this and that these absences would not be excused. Students who choose to be absent may miss important assessments, exams, presentations, labs, or instructional time, and students who skip will receive zeros on the assignments given or due.
Senior courses are currently in the final stages of important learning and assessment that impact their final marks. We would appreciate your support in encouraging your child to finish the year strongly by attending classes consistently and remaining engaged in their learning.
Thank you for your partnership and support as we work together to help students finish the school year well while also celebrating this important season in students’ lives.
Sincerely,
The Leadership Team
