K-Grade 8 Student Led Conferences

Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) in Kindergarten through Grade 8 are a communication tool that gives you insight into your child’s learning progress through your child’s point of view.

At the SLC, students share their learning progress by leading you through their learning portfolio and identifying evidence of growth. The SLCs are attended by the student, parent/guardian, and teacher(s). However, unlike our parent/teacher interviews, the teacher’s role is to facilitate the meeting and the student leads the conference.

What are the goals of Student-Led Conferences?

  • To increase student ownership, accountability, and autonomy concerning personal learning

  • To teach students the process of self-assessment and reflection for growth

  • To hone student organization, communication and critical thinking skills and to increase self-confidence

  • To build transparent relationships with families concerning student learning

What is the role of the parent/guardian?

As the second most essential attendee to the SLC (after the student), parents fill the role of supporter. Parents ask clarifying questions and/or share feedback towards the end of the SLC. As well, parents help the student meet his or her learning goals by supporting progress at home. We remind parents that this is a time for the student to share learning. If you have other questions and/or concerns you want to discuss with your child’s teacher, we ask that you email the teacher to set up a different time for this conversation.

As always, parents are strongly encouraged to be regular participants in their child’s learning journey, as the parent voice is valued and appreciated. Each student’s learning is communicated in an ongoing way through their digital portfolio. Parents may access their child’s myBlueprint account to view evidence of learning and comment on their child’s learning journey.

When are SLCs and how do I sign up?

All students from K-grade 8 will prepare a Student Led Conference. The sessions are as follows:

  • Thursday, March 7 from 10 AM-7 PM
  • Friday, March 8 from 8 AM-2 PM
  • Students in Grades K-3 will be signing up in groups of 3-4 students
    • There will be stations set up for each child to move individually through to share their learning with their parents
    • Being a part of a group of students all sharing with their parents at the same time allows the students to feel more comfortable in sharing their learning
    • The teachers of the Grade K-3 students will help facilitate these stations
  • Students in Grades 4-8 will have individual time slots for one-on-one presentations as a part of a graduated exposure to sharing learning in a more detailed manner

Secure your time slot on each classroom teacher’s page at the following link: Sign up here

Scroll through the headers at the top to find your child’s teacher/class before booking. The top of the page should have your child’s grade and teacher name on it.

The SLC sessions will be fully in-person this year. Unfortunately we are not able to offer remote or online sessions. We ask that you try to find childcare for siblings if possible, as we want all parties to be able to focus fully on the child who is sharing. Teachers may not have play space set up in their classrooms for siblings.

Please note:

  • On March 7 and 8 there will be no regular classes for K- Grade 8
  • Grades 9-12 are in session as per usual
  • There will be an MRCS Merch shop set up in the hallway

We look forward to continuing this partnership with you and your child. Any questions can be addressed to .

Sincerely,
