July 29 – Education Announcement

Earlier today, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Education Minister Rob Fleming announced moving to the Stage 2 plan for school districts in the fall. Although specific details are still to come later in August, I know that we are all anxious to better understand what school will look like in September. I will do my best to keep you informed with the latest developments as they are released, for now, this is where things stand:

  • Schools will aim to have as many students on site as safely possible
    • K-7 students will be back on site on a full-time basis
    • Given the size of our high school, 8-12 students will also likely be on site as much as possible
  • Establishing safe learning environments is a top priority
    • The BC Government has allocated additional funding to ensure that schools receive the proper cleaning personnel, cleaning stations, and protective equipment that is needed
    • Students and staff will be expected to stay home if there is any symptom of illness
    • Students and staff will be assigned to a learning group that reduces their contacts within the school
  • Learning groups (also called cohorts) are a key strategy
    • A learning group can have a maximum of 60 elementary or middle school students or 120 high school students
    • These learning groups are easily accommodated at MRCS due to our smaller student population
    • Students will remain in their learning groups for recess and lunch breaks
  • A more detailed update will be provided later in August

We are excited and look forward to welcoming back our MRCS families on site in September. For now, continue to enjoy your summer and stay safe. May the Shalom of God be with you all.
